Jakarta (ANN)  – Facing the 2024 election political and democratic party year, the media must report objectively and coolly, educatively and not slip in polarization, so that it can become a reference for the public in obtaining information about politics.

This view was conveyed by the Chairperson of the Central Leadership Council of the Association of Indonesian Journalists [DPP PWRI] Dr. Suriyanto PD, SH, MH, M.Kn, through a statement in Jakarta, Sunday [1/5/2023].

Suriyanto revealed that the media must be able to become a literacy space for people about politics, as the function of the press is one of the pillars of democracy.
“The media must be objective, analytical, and adhere to the ideals and journalistic code of ethics. Do not get caught up in polarization, and must be able to encourage the creation of honest and fair elections,” said Suriyanto.

Suriyanto revealed that the media must provide information that contains positive values and optimism and encourages the creation of political conduciveness, and is clear in analysis.
“The task of the media is how to empower the community. Media crews or journalists must be able to produce works that educate their readers and build optimism,” he explained.

The cyber crime lecturer at a university in Jakarta added, in the midst of a flood of information via social media, the media must be able to be an antidote to wild information on social media. Because the media is the last bastion that must provide accurate and useful information, for example related to elections.

“This media must be able to produce works that provide understanding in increasing public participation to succeed in the 2024 Election,” he said.
The press, said Suriyanto, is referred to as a pillar of democracy because through the press the people’s voice is the main foundation in democracy, freely expressed and articulated in the practice of being a nation. For this reason, the basis for thinking of members of the press, must refer to the rules contained in Law no. 40 of 1999 concerning the Press and the Journalistic Code of Ethics.
So, he continued, good and educative journalistic works would be produced as part of efforts to provide good political education for the community.
